The Seattle Times and Newsday sue OpenAI and Microsoft

📅 2026-09-06

Abstract:

Two more news organizations are suing OpenAI and Microsoft, accusing them of using their news coverage to train artificial intelligence. The Seattle Times and Newsday sued, saying journalism could be "completely imploded" with the advent of artificial intelligence. The lawsuit likens generative AI to "a snake eating its own tail" that could "destroy" the institutions that produce its training content.

A Microsoft spokesperson told GeekWire that the company was "surprised" by the lawsuit but is "always happy to sit down and explore options for resolving disputes like this."
