U.S. President Trump recently posted on social platforms that the name artificial intelligence is neither accurate nor elegant enough. Trump proposed changing the name of artificial intelligence to Superior Intelligence, Extreme Intelligence or Supreme Intelligence.
Trump also launched a vote for netizens to choose a name, but the choices Trump gave were only these three new names without the original name of artificial intelligence. The current super intelligence vote rate is 41%. If artificial intelligence is included in the options, there is no doubt that this term will get the most votes.
The origin of the term artificial intelligence:
Artificial intelligence is the Chinese translation of the English Artificial Intelligence. This English term was first explicitly used by John McCarthy in 1955. And the birth of this term is also quite interesting. On August 31, 1955, John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester, and Claude Shannon jointly submitted the "Dartmouth Artificial Intelligence Summer Research Project Proposal" to the Rockefeller Foundation. The word artificial intelligence was written for the first time in the proposal.
The proposal uses the term artificial intelligence and envisages two months and about 10 people studying "every aspect of learning, or any other feature of intelligence, that can in principle be described so accurately that machines can simulate it". The fundamental reason why John McCarthy coined and used the term artificial intelligence was that at that time there were already research directions such as cybernetics and automata, so artificial intelligence was used to distinguish it from directions such as cybernetics and to give the new field a distinct and neutral label.
Trump says AI will become an engine of economic growth:
Trump has long publicly supported the expansion of the artificial intelligence industry. Trump calls AI the greatest economic development engine in history and believes that the potential of artificial intelligence even exceeds that of oil, gold, diamonds and the Internet.
In his latest statement, Trump did not provide a legal or technical solution for changing the name. Trump mainly criticized the term artificial intelligence from a communication and political perspective. Trump believes that current AI systems already have stronger content generation, reasoning and automation capabilities than traditional software, and the term artificial may not accurately reflect its development direction.
However, super intelligence or supreme intelligence are more like political slogans and brand expressions, emphasizing that system capabilities are higher than traditional human tools, but they cannot replace existing technology classifications. Of course, this is just Trump's proposal. Whether to change the name depends on the attitude of the entire industry.
