According to reports, ChatGPT's usage declined this summer, but data from third-party companies show that its usage has begun to rise again. The main reason is that American students have returned to school and student visits have increased. ChatGPT is a robot chat and writing tool developed by OpenAI, an American artificial intelligence manufacturer. According to data from technology market research company SimilarWeb, last week, the usage of ChatGPT on computers and smartphones in the United States increased by approximately 12% month-on-month.

YipitData, another technology market research company, also said that during the summer vacation in August, the usage of ChatGPT reached a low point, but in the second half of August, the usage began to rise.

However, various data show that compared with the peak period of ChatGPT usage this spring, the current access traffic is still relatively low.

As American students return to school, ChatGPT traffic begins to grow. This situation may exacerbate some people's concerns about "student abuse of AI." Currently, ChatGPT is very popular among students. Students can use this tool to generate computer program code, generate summary reports, write term papers, or complete assignments in various subjects in a few minutes.

For OpenAI, if the proportion of students among ChatGPT users is too high, it may affect future revenue growth. After all, students are not a stable user group in business.

YipitData's research report pointed out that according to the company's analysis, ChatGPT access traffic has increased recently, and students' return to school is a driving factor, but it is not the only reason.

According to analysis, student groups often use ChatGPT in fields related to learning and education. The growth rate of usage of student user groups is as high as 21%, while the growth rate of non-student groups is only 8%. SimilarWeb pointed out that students returning to school is a main reason for the increase in ChatGPT traffic.

Another data analysis company "SensorTower" said that in the last two weeks of August, ChatGPT's single-week visits around the world increased by 10%, and this time coincided with a large number of students in the United States returning to school. The company said that in addition to students, another reason for the increase in traffic was increased visits from India and Brazil.

OpenAI did not comment on changes in traffic volume.

In November last year, ChatGPT was officially launched. This generative artificial intelligence product quickly attracted people's attention and became popular around the world. Two months after it went online, the number of global users exceeded 100 million.

However, after several months of rocket growth, ChatGPT’s traffic began to decline. In May this year, ChatGPT visits in the United States fell by 10%, fell by 15% in June, and continued to fall by 4% in July.

The popularity of ChatGPT around the world has also forced schools at all levels to seriously examine the impact of generative artificial intelligence on students. Some schools directly ban students from using it, while others integrate artificial intelligence technology into courses to help students improve learning efficiency.

It is reported that some schools have developed guidelines and policies on generative artificial intelligence, but more schools have given the power to teachers to decide how students use artificial intelligence tools in the classroom.
