Samsung is working with Google and Qualcomm to develop a new high-end extended reality (XR) headset. In August, images of an XR headset prototype leaked online, showing tracking RGB cameras and depth sensors. A new rumor claims that the device will allow users to smell virtual environments and objects.

According to a tweet by leaker and X user @Tech_Reve, the Samsung XR headset will display a pixel density of 3000ppi. Like Apple's Vision Pro headset, it is said to support hand tracking. The leaker claims that the XR headset will incorporate smell capabilities to some extent.


It’s unclear whether the device will be able to detect odors in real environments or will use advanced synthetic technology to create artificial odors. If it's the latter, it would be a major breakthrough, as no major consumer electronics company has yet successfully added effective scent-replicating functionality to a VR or AR headset.

The headset is expected to use Qualcomm XR processor, which is different from the previously rumored Samsung Exynos2200 chip. It will also use an operating system co-developed with Google.

The company also said that the new XR headset will be unveiled at Samsung’s LSI Technology Days. The event will be held in San Jose on October 5, where the company will discuss future technologies such as artificial intelligence, 5G and machine vision.

Samsung is no stranger to the virtual reality industry. The company released multiple GearVR headset models from 2015 to 2017, but they are developing a Galaxy model. It is understood that the new XR headset will be a truly independent device and not just limited to Galaxy models.

In addition to Samsung and Apple, Microsoft is also one of the companies investing the most in the AR market. In 2021, it won a 10-year contract to provide these headsets to the military.
