Samsung today announced two new microSD cards, one of which has extremely fast read speeds, even faster than the SATA-based solid-state drives inside your PC. Samsung revealed in a press release that it has started sampling a 256GB microSD card based on the SDExpress standard, the company's first microSD card to support the standard.
This means the card's top sequential read speed is up to 800MB per second. This speed is four times that of a regular UHS-1 microSD card and even faster than the maximum read speed of a SATA solid-state drive, which is limited to 560MB per second.
Samsung claims that the speed of the new 256MB SD Express microSD card will provide better overall performance for PCs and smartphones. The microSD card also uses Dynamic Thermal Protection (DTG) technology to ensure that the temperature inside the card remains stable after long-term use.
Samsung also announced that it has begun mass production of 1TB versions of its ProPlus and EvoPlus microSD card products. They stack eight layers of Samsung's V-NAND in a small card design. The company said: The new 1TB microSD card has passed the industry's most stringent test settings and can be used reliably even in challenging environments, with features such as water resistance, extreme temperature resistance, drop-proof design, abrasion protection, and X-ray and magnetic protection.
Samsung's 256GB SD Express microSD card will be available later this year, while the 1TB ProPlus and EvoPlus microSD cards will be available in the third quarter of 2024. But the company has not yet revealed the price of the new microSD card.
