It’s fair to say that AI is already starting to make the kinds of waves we’ve come to expect, and by the end of this year or next year, we’ll start seeing AI-powered devices on flagship smartphones that have managed to gain a lot of attention. Companies such as Samsung and Google are also constantly working to ensure that their devices can be equipped with artificial intelligence while maintaining hardware specifications. Now, a report suggests that the South Korean tech giant is working with Microsoft to develop a chatbot.

According to the latest information obtained, Samsung appears to be working with Microsoft on "internal generative artificial intelligence development." The two companies are working together to develop what is currently known as Samsung Chatbot, and the information we have so far shows that it will handle tasks such as translation and document summarization, and will use LLM developed by OpenAI to complete it.
According to South Korea's "Electronic Daily" report on the 11th, Samsung Electronics is using Microsoft's Azure OpenAI service to create an artificial intelligence chatbot to assist the company's internal work. Earlier, Microsoft invested 12 trillion won in OpenAI and signed an exclusive license, which clearly stipulates:
(1) OpenAI must run on the Azure cloud;
(2) When OpenAI provides services to enterprises, it must be provided only on the Azure cloud.
Therefore, if Samsung wants to develop its own generative AI using OpenAI's LLM, it will have to use Azure Cloud.
Samsung is developing internal generative artificial intelligence tools using LLM application programming interfaces (APIs) such as "GPT-4" and "GPT-3.5" provided by the Azure OpenAI service. APIs are interfaces that allow programs to send and receive data, making it easier for companies to integrate features like ChatGPT into their applications or services.
Samsung is reportedly connecting the service with OpenAI’s LLM and conducting a proof-of-concept (PoC). "Currently, Samsung Electronics is preparing a service that uses APIs on Azure," an MS representative said. "We are working on a PoC on which model to use."
Samsung decided to develop an enterprise chatbot based on an open AI model because of the growing need to use generative AI for business innovation. Previously, Samsung had temporarily suspended the use of generative AI such as ChatGPT through internal PCs due to the risk of leaking confidential information.
This accelerated cooperation with MS, which provides an open artificial intelligence large language model (LLM), and Samsung seems to have decided to develop a Samsung chatbot without worrying about data security. "We started development around June, but there are still too many variables to disclose publicly," a Samsung official said.
The name of the service that Samsung will provide based on the OpenAI Large Language Model (LLM) has also attracted much attention. Samsung recently submitted trademark applications for "Gauss" and "Gais" to the Korean Intellectual Property Office. In the trademark application, Samsung listed "computer software (SW) for language and speech processing based on machine learning" and "computer software (SW) for natural language processing/creation/understanding/analysis" as trademark products. Whether these two trademarks will be used for the generative AI service of this PoC is worthy of attention.
All of this does sound exciting, but the bigger concern is how these chatbots will help users in any way. Of course, it would be better if there was an offline AI that didn’t require an internet connection.
We can't say too much about what's coming, but it's clear that Samsung, along with other companies like Apple, Google, and Microsoft, are looking forward to making this happen. Not only that, but thanks to Qualcomm's next-generation Snapdragon processors, this will all be closer to reality than it is now, and hopefully by the end of this year we'll have a smartphone with built-in artificial intelligence that doesn't require an active internet connection to function.
