Google today announced improvements to search suggestions in Chrome. As part of the improvements, users will start getting more helpful search suggestions in Chrome based on other people’s search results, see more images for suggested searches, and find search suggestions even on poor connections.
Search suggestions are the drop-down list of suggested completions that appear before you enter your query in Google. This feature generates predictive results to help users save time and search faster. With these new updates, Google is expanding the availability of search suggestions and using them to improve inspiration.
When users log into Chrome on desktop and open a new tab, they will now start seeing suggestions in the search box related to their previous searches, based on what others are searching for. For example, if your recent search was for "Japchae," you might see search suggestions for other popular Korean dishes that others are searching for, such as tteok-bokki (spicy stir-fried rice cakes), bulgogi (grilled beef slices), and bibimbap (stone pot bibimbap).
Chrome previously only showed search suggested images in the address bar that exactly matched your product query. If you type "Isanti dining table", a picture of a dining table will appear in the address bar. However, Google points out that sometimes you don't really know what you're looking for, which is why it's started showing helpful images of a wider range of shopping categories and products based on simpler searches.
For example, if you start typing "boho table," Google will show you images of boho tables, boho tablecloths, boho table flowers, and boho table lamps. This way, even if you don’t know the specific product you’re searching for, you can still find related products you’re interested in. Updates to suggested searches will be rolling out on Android and iOS.
Google also announced that Chrome browser users on Android and iOS will now be able to see search suggestions even on poor network connections, thanks to improved on-device functionality. The update means users will also get more helpful suggestions when browsing in incognito mode.
