On Wednesday, September 27th, Eastern Time, Meta released blockbuster new head displays and smart glasses during its annual developer conference Connect. It also announced that all its apps are supported by artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots. This means that Meta’s 3 billion users will have an experience similar to that provided by the OpenAI robot ChatGPT.

Specifically, Meta’s AI assistant will be available on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, as well as dozens of AI characters based on celebrities such as MrBeast and Charli D’Amelio.

Meta’s AI assistant can edit images, design trips for users to share with friends in chat groups, and answer questions that users typically query search engines for answers to.

Meta has also launched a development studio to allow brands to build their own AI tools based on Meta’s messaging service.

Meta’s vice president of generative AI, Ahmad Al-Dahle, said Meta’s AI is a “customized” large language model (LLM) “based on many of the core principles behind Llama2.”

The starting price of Quest3 has increased by 67%, is thinner, has higher resolution, and is equipped with Qualcomm’s higher-speed chip.

Before Apple's mixed reality headset VisionPro goes on sale early next year, Meta has released an upgraded version of the headset, which is nearly 70% more expensive than the previous generation. Even with the price increase, the price is still far lower than VisionPro's $3,499, which is expected to "harvest" a wave of market during this year's holiday shopping season.

Released a new generation of head display Quest3, starting at US$499, which is US$200 higher than the starting price of the previous generation Quest2 released in 2020, an increase of approximately 67%. The basic Quest3 comes with 128GB of memory, and an upgrade to 512GB of internal storage costs $649.99.

Quest3 will be available for pre-order on Wednesday and will start shipping on October 10th.

Media comments said that unlike the previous generation Quest2, which was just a virtual reality (VR) headset, Quest3 is more like a mixed reality (MR) headset like VisionPro that integrates VR and augmented reality (AR). There are also comments that it marks Meta’s transition from VR to MR.

Palwasha Khatri, product manager of Quest3, said that this device "requires no wires and no battery pack." Some media said that this rhetoric shows that Meta is trying to position the product as a more mainstream MR headset.

In terms of configuration, Quest3 is equipped with Qualcomm’s faster Snapdragon XR2 second-generation processor and has 8GB RAM. Meta says that the graphics performance of Quest3 is twice that of Quest2 and even much better than QuestPro running a generation XR2 chip.

Quest3 has the best display performance launched by Meta to date. Its display has a single-eye resolution of 2064x2208 pixels and a double-eye resolution of 4128x2208 pixels. The pixel count is 30% higher than that of Quest2.

Because of the Pancake lens, the thickness of Quest3 is 40% thinner than that of Quest2. Its weight is 515 grams, which is slightly heavier than Quest2’s 503 grams. Meta said that the design has been changed to make it more comfortable for users to wear.

Meta also said that the battery life of Quest3 is about the same as that of Quest2. This means battery life ranges from 90 minutes to 3 hours.

Quest3 provides a horizontal field of view of 110 degrees and a vertical field of view of 96 degrees, which is about 15% larger than Quest2 and slightly larger than QuestPro. Users can adjust the lens using a new wheel slide on the outside of the headset to find the right position more easily.

Like the Quest Pro released last year, the Quest3's TouchPlus controller does not use a tracking ring and instead uses infrared sensors to track the user's position. Quest3 also has improved haptics so users can feel more visceral vibrations when playing games. Quest3 also supports hand tracking, allowing users to do without a controller at all.

In terms of functionality, Meta still regards Quest3 mainly as a gaming device. In addition to adapting to all the content of Quest2, Quest3 also has some new games launched, such as "Roblox", "Assassin's Creed Nexus", and "Wrath of Asgard 2".

Since Meta already cooperated with Microsoft last year, Quest3 users can enjoy the Xbox cloud gaming service and play Xbox games directly.

Thanks to apps such as Supernatural, Meta also positions Quest3 as a fitness and health device.

Quest3 will also provide augmented reality versions of Lego games. Meta CEO Zuckerberg said Meta's mixed reality devices will let users "understand your space so you can play with the world around you," allowing users to solve puzzles or "make their own creations on any flat surface in the room."

Meta also released a charging stand for Quest3 and its controller, priced at $129.99. This is the first time Meta has equipped a headset with a wireless charging stand.

The new version of smart glasses starts at $299 and can play music, answer calls, take photos, record videos and live broadcast

Meta also released a new version of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses during the Connect event on Wednesday, starting at $299. It will be available for pre-order on Wednesday and will be available on October 17.

The new version of smart glasses is equipped with Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 generation chip and has an audio system similar to Amazon EchoFrames and BoseTempo series, which can play music that only glasses users can hear. Meta has also significantly upgraded the microphone system of the glasses. Among the five microphones of the glasses, one is located on the bridge of the user's nose, which allows the user to answer calls and issue voice commands more clearly.

It also doubles as a camera, thanks to a small camera on the right temple, and users can store about 500 photos and 100 30-second videos on the glasses, all synced via Meta's AppView.

In addition to taking photos and recording videos, users can also use the glasses to live broadcast. Just tap a few times on the temples to start live broadcasting on Facebook or Instagram. When recording a live broadcast, the white light around the lens will flash to remind the user that recording is in progress.
