Berkshire Hathaway Vice Chairman Charlie Munger recently donated $40 million to a museum in California, which he has supported in the past. According to a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Munger donated 77 shares of Berkshire Hathaway Class A stock to the Henry Huntington Library and Art Museum in San Marino, California. Based on Thursday's closing price of $523,545.06 per share, the gift is worth more than $40.3 million.
Ten years ago, Munger donated nearly $33 million worth of Berkshire stock to the museum to help pay for a new education and visitor center.
A spokesman for the museum said Thursday that Munger's latest donation will be used to build more than 30 residences for visiting scholars to use while doing research at the museum.
After his latest donation, Munger still holds 4,033 shares of Berkshire Class A stock, worth about $2.11 billion at Thursday's closing price. In 2000, he held 15,911 shares, which would now be worth more than $8.3 billion if he had held on to them.
