During this period, the mobile version of Firefox browser has been criticized a lot. Previously, Firefox engineers explained that the Firefox for iOS version is currently being refactored, but the Android version has also caused complaints from users due to various changes. The current Firefox for Android is actually the previous Fenix version, which is already a reconstructed version. The nightly build version of the Firefox browser no longer displays the complete URL address, only the main domain name.
This situation only appears in the nightly build version of the Android version of Firefox browser. If Firefox browser is ready to move forward, this change is expected to arrive in the official version in the next three months.
Firefox browser engineers also responded in the feedback post that this is the expected behavior of the new address bar and new navigation bar design, that is, it is deliberately designed this way and is not a potential BUG.
This practice of only displaying the main domain name is actually the same on the Google Chrome mobile version. The complete URL can only be seen when the user clicks on the address bar. The reason for this is for security reasons.
By only displaying the main domain name, you can prevent hackers from confusing users by forging subdomain names or paths, such as the following situations:
https://www.google.com.domain.com
https://www.domain.com/?www.firefox.com
https://www-google-com.domain.com
When only the main domain name is displayed, the above three domain names will only be displayed as domain.com in the address bar and other information will no longer be displayed. Google decided to display only the main domain name in the hope of preventing users from being deceived in this way.
However, there is no statistical data yet on whether this method really reduces the success rate of phishing websites. In fact, for non-professional users, they may only pay attention to the statements in the web content and not what the domain name looks like.
Now that the Firefox browser has decided to follow up on this practice, some users are dissatisfied. I wonder if the Firefox browser will reserve an option for users who need it to display the full URL in the address bar by default.
