According to the latest TIOBE programming language rankings for August 2024, Python’s share exceeded 18% for the first time, consolidating its leading position in the programming language world. The last time a programming language's share exceeded 18% was in November 2016, created by Java.
Currently, the gap between Python and second-ranked C++ has widened to 8%. The largest gap between first and second place also appeared in November 2016, when Java led the C language by 9.55%.
TIOBE CEO Paul Jansen spoke highly of Python: "All in all, Python's hegemony is undisputed. In the next step, Python is likely to become the most popular programming language in history."
He also said that although emerging languages such as Rust and Kotlin are quickly approaching the top 10 of the TIOBE index, they still have a long way to go before they can truly threaten Python's status.
In other aspects, the ranking of SQL rose to 7th, while the Go language dropped to 9th. The rankings of MATLAB and PHP also improved, rising to 11th and 13th respectively.
The TIOBE Index is calculated by analyzing data from engineers, courses and third-party vendors worldwide, as well as search data from popular search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, Wikipedia, Amazon, YouTube and Baidu.
It should be noted that the TIOBE index only reflects the popularity of a certain programming language, and does not indicate the quality of a programming language, nor the amount of code written in the language.
