It is said that Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen3 will be equipped with Adreno750 GPU, and according to previously leaked test results, this graphics processor is more than 80% faster than the Adreno740 in the current generation Snapdragon 8 Gen2. Unfortunately, this performance gap may close slightly when the product finally becomes commercially available, as new rumors suggest that the Adreno 750 may be underclocked and Qualcomm may lock the frequency at a new threshold for targeted energy efficiency.

It is rumored that the new frequency of Adreno750 GPU is 770MHz, but mobile phone manufacturers can also choose to flexibly adjust this frequency.

There were previous rumors that the Adreno750 running in Snapdragon 8 Gen3 will run at 903MHz. @faridofanani96 discovered a Weibo post by a tipster named "Feiwei" that the clock frequency will be reduced to 770MHz. The message was short and did not go into depth as to why Qualcomm was sacrificing the performance of Snapdragon 8Gen3, but it may have something to do with achieving specific energy efficiency goals.

Since Snapdragon 8Gen3 is not mass-produced using TSMC's 3nm or N3B process, Qualcomm may only have a fairly small power headroom before the performance of the Adreno750 begins to decrease. Slowing the clock frequency from 903MHz to 770MHz will likely bring the biggest battery life improvements and cooling effects, but the impact on performance will be acceptable.

It's unclear at this stage whether smartphone manufacturers can overclock the Adreno750, but companies like Asus that make gaming phones should have that flexibility. Sadly, the huge performance boost we saw in the leaked benchmarks may no longer be there, and even the A17 Pro's 6-core GPU may continue to have the upper hand as a result.

But having said that, after downclocking, users don’t have to worry about the device overheating, and the Adreno750 can maintain performance when running graphics-intensive applications such as benchmarks and games. Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit is about to take place, where we will learn the full specifications of Snapdragon 8 Gen3 and see which rumors hold up, so stay tuned.
