This is the most memorable milestone moment in the history of x86 development! On October 15, local time, at the 2024 Lenovo Innovation and Technology Conference,Intel and AMD officially announced the establishment of the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group (x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group), which brings together technology leaders in the industry to jointly revitalize the future of x86, the world's most widely used computing architecture.
Founding members include: Broadcom, Dell, Google, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, HP Inc., Lenovo, Meta, Microsoft, Oracle and Red Hat, as well as luminaries Linus Torvalds and Tim Sweeney.
Both parties believe that x86 has been the cornerstone of modern computing for more than four decades and has become the architecture of choice for data centers and PCs around the world. In today's evolving environment, the importance of a strong and expanding x86 ecosystem is more important than ever.
Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said:"We are on the cusp of one of the most significant shifts in the x86 architecture and ecosystem in decades, requiring higher levels of customization, compatibility and scalability to meet current and future customer needs. We are proud to stand with AMD and the founding members of this advisory group to ignite the future of computing, and we are grateful for the support of so many industry leaders."
AMD Chairman and CEO Lisasu said:"Establishing the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group will ensure that the x86 architecture continues to evolve and become the computing platform of choice for developers and customers. We are excited to bring the industry together to provide direction for future architectural enhancements and continue x86's incredible success for decades to come."
It is understood that the x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group will unite industry leaders to shape the future of x86 through a more unified set of instructions and architectural interfaces and promote developer innovation. The group will solicit technical input from the x86 hardware and software communities on basic functionality and features.
The collaboration will help create consistent and compatible implementations of key x86 architecture capabilities and programming models that scale across all domains, including data center, cloud, client, edge and embedded devices, ultimately delivering downstream benefits to customers.
Expected results include:
Enhance customers' choice and compatibility between hardware and software while accelerating their ability to benefit from new cutting-edge capabilities.
Simplified architectural guidance to enhance software consistency and interfaces between Intel and AMD's x86 products.
Enable broader and more efficient integration of new capabilities into operating systems, frameworks, and applications.
As the fiercest competitors, Intel and AMD have been in love with each other for many years. They jointly focus on platform-level advancement, introduction of standards and mitigation of security vulnerabilities in the x86 ecosystem. Played a key role in the formulation of important standards such as USB and PCIe.
The x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group takes industry collaboration to the next level to benefit the entire computing ecosystem and serves as a catalyst for x86 innovation.
We will wait and see what kind of sparks Intel and AMD will create in the future!
