Sony will consider implementing cloud streaming support in the next few months, and the PlayStation Portal handheld console may attract more players to buy it in the future. Sony's Hideaki Nishino talked about the handheld game console in an interview with Japanese publication AVWatch.
He said remote gaming and cloud streaming only differ in server location, so there are no technical hurdles to overcome to implement cloud streaming support. Therefore, Sony is currently only focusing on RemotePlay, but will consider expanding the capabilities of the game console in the future.
This statement is a bit puzzling, because if PlayStation Portal can support cloud streaming on the first day of launch, the market evaluation will obviously be higher. But it's at least good to know that this model may support cloud streaming in the future. As it stands, the device is a good choice for enjoying PlayStation 5 games, but as Kay highlighted in his review, it feels a little limited.
PlayStation Portal will be released globally tomorrow, November 15th.
PlayStation Portal is not the handheld successor Sony has been clamoring for since the demise of the PlayStation Vita. Still, PlayStation Portal does one thing, and it does it extremely well. It may not reinvent the remote gaming experience, but for those players who rely on mobile controller accessory clamps, or third-party controllers that use their mobile devices as displays, Sony's official product provides a unified solution. It may not be able to replace the controllers and other gaming devices in players' homes, but the PlayStation Portal may become the first handheld gaming product that PS players try.
