An engineer improved Apple's Magic Mouse, adding a USB-C charging port (in a better location) and not only that, but designing a more ergonomic case for it.

Ivan Kuleshov, who hacked Apple's Macmini to power it via a PoE+ cable, has now modified the Magic Mouse. The Magic Mouse has been basically unchanged since its debut in 2009. The main reason it has been criticized is that the charging port is at the bottom and must be flipped over during charging to make it unusable. Because this design is too un-Apple-like, it has become a well-known meme on the Internet.

It was and still is charged via a Lightning cable, though it was expected to use a USB-C port instead, and that's via a connector on the bottom of the mouse.

Kuleshov has addressed that problem, along with another criticism that the MagicMouse isn't very ergonomic and feels uncomfortable to use. Taken together, these problems mean that the MagicMouse can rightly be called one of JonyIve's worst designs.

In Kuleshov's new design, Apple's Magic Mouse appears to simply sit on a wider, deeper base. In reality, getting this right requires more engineering work, including routing the battery connector "so the mouse doesn't turn off while charging."

In addition to demonstrating the use of the improved MagicMouse, the full thread on Twitter/X shows off a number of different shell designs that Kuleshov tried. Additionally, he detailed the steps needed to create a USB-C connector that would allow users to continue using their mouse while charging.

Kuleshov said he will publish all specifications and details on GitHub soon.
