Chimei Group founder Xu Wenlong passed away at noon today (18th) at the age of 95. It is understood that Xu Wenlong had been admitted to Chi Mei Hospital for a period of time due to health reasons. Earlier, Chi Mei Group issued a brief statement saying, "The founder, Mr. Xu Wenlong, left us at 11:17 am on November 18. Currently, founder Xu's family and Chi Mei Group are handling related matters. Please give us some time to prepare. The group will release a statement as soon as possible. Thank you again."


Xu Wenlong was born on February 25, 1928, in Tainan, Taiwan. He graduated from the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Tainan Polytechnic Institute and is the chairman of Chimei Hospital, the chairman of Chimei Cultural Foundation, the chairman of Chimei Industrial Company, and the chairman of Chimei Electronics Company.

Xu Wenlong was born in Taiwan during the Japanese colonial period. Chimei Industrial Co., Ltd., founded in 1959, was Taiwan's first acrylic panel manufacturer. In just 10 years, Chimei became one of the world's top acrylic panel suppliers. Xu Wenlong is also known as the "Father of Taiwan's Acrylic Panels." Its important position in Taiwan's petrochemical industry is as important as that of Wang Yongqing's Formosa Plastics Group, and it is known as "Formosa Plastics to the north, Chimei to the south".

Xu Wenlong, the founder of Taiwan's Chi Mei Enterprises, was originally engaged in the chemical plastics industry. After 2000, he established Chi Mei Electronics and switched to investing in LCD screens.

He likes to think all his life, and his hobbies are playing the violin, guzheng, and fishing. He is called an "old boy". Advocating the purpose of enterprises as "a means to pursue happiness", in 2000 we took the lead in implementing a two-day weekend system and encouraged employees to come to and from get off work on time. After he founded Chimei Hospital and Chimei Museum, he once said: "Five hundred years from now, Chimei Corporation may no longer be seen in the world; however, Chimei Hospital and Chimei Museum may continue to exist."

Hsu Wen-lung publicly expressed his support for Chen Shui-bian during Taiwan's 2000 presidential election. He was once known as the "green businessman". However, on March 26, 2005 (the day of Taiwan's "326 Protect Taiwan" parade), he delivered a retirement speech, expressing his support for one China and his opposition to "Taiwan independence."

Chimei Electronics is currently the fourth largest LCD panel manufacturer in the world. It is actively building an optoelectronic cluster in Nanke and plans to complete nine factories in 2007.
