The close relationship between Donald Trump and Elon Musk has led to claims that the world's richest man and head of the Department of Government Effectiveness (DOGE) will be given his own West Wing office. However, when asked whether these reports were accurate, Trump denied them.
On Monday, the New York Times reported that Musk is likely to get an office in the West Wing building for DOGE. This contradicts previous reports that the Tesla CEO was expected to have an office in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building next to the West Wing.
During a press conference on Monday night, during which Trump signed an executive order creating and implementing DOGE, Trump was asked directly whether Musk would get the West Wing office.
"No," Trump replied. "He's going to get an office with about 20 people that we're hiring to make sure these (executive orders) are implemented."
Musk has reportedly been asking about his level of access to the White House. It is reported that he has been issued an all-access blue badge, which allows the holder to enter various parts of the White House building without going through the same level of security every time he enters the building.
DOGE has spent much of the past two months at SpaceX's Washington headquarters. Although not a federal executive branch, DOGE's goal is to cut wasteful spending and unnecessary regulations, such as reducing the number of federal employees, eliminating some federal agencies, and increasing government productivity through modernizing federal technology. Musk had said he wanted to cut $2 trillion from the U.S. budget, but he later backtracked and admitted that figure was unlikely to be achieved.
The executive order establishing DOGE states that its purpose is to "modernize federal technology and software to maximize government efficiency and productivity." This office will replace the United States Digital Service (USDS). Each federal department must establish a four-person team to liaise with the new office.
Despite being a new agency, the Office of Gender Equality has already faced legal action. It was hit with at least three lawsuits within minutes of Trump being sworn in. Public interest law firm National Security Counselors said DOGE violated transparency requirements under the 1972 law. The plaintiffs claimed that DOGE should be considered a "federal advisory committee," but it lacked "fair and balanced" representation, kept no minutes of meetings, and was not open to public scrutiny.
Vivek Ramaswamy was set to lead DOGE alongside Musk, but he was reportedly removed from his post at the behest of Musk and members of Trump's inner circle.
