According to news on the evening of January 22, JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon said in an interview with the media today that the differences between Musk and I have been resolved. "Elon and I both embraced that," Dimon said. "He came to one of our meetings and I had a long chat with him. We worked through some of our differences."
At the same time, Dimon also praised Musk for running Tesla, SpaceX and Neuralink, among other companies. Dimon also said: "He is our Einstein. I will be happy to do whatever I can to help him and his company."
In addition, Dimon also supports Musk's plan to reduce government spending. As head of Trump's "Department of Government Effectiveness" (DOGE), Musk plans to cut $2 trillion in federal spending.
Dimon said the government needs to be more responsible and efficient and should focus more on results rather than simply investing money.
It's no secret that the relationship between Musk and Dimon has been tense since 2016. At the time, Musk wanted JPMorgan to guarantee Tesla's electric car leases, but JPMorgan executives were hesitant.
Musk was outraged by the decision and called JPMorgan Chase's then-head of consumer banking, people familiar with the matter said. Later, Dimon replied to Musk, saying that JPMorgan Chase does not accept bullying.
In the years that followed, Musk worked closely with many of JPMorgan's competitors. Tesla and SpaceX have paid Goldman Sachs nearly $90 million in fees since 2010, according to Dealogic.
In 2021, JPMorgan Chase filed a lawsuit against Tesla, seeking compensation of US$162 million. JPMorgan Chase said Tesla owed money from a 2014 deal. In 2023, Tesla countersued that JPMorgan was angry in part because it had failed to obtain Musk's business.
But last November, both companies dropped their lawsuits against each other. In fact, the relationship between Dimon and Musk had eased before this.
In March last year, Musk attended JPMorgan Chase's first technology conference and talked with Dimon on stage, and the relationship seemed to be harmonious. Since then, JPMorgan and Musk's empire appear to have opened the door to future collaborations, people familiar with the matter said.
