Apple CEO Tim Cook announced on X.com that the company will donate to relief efforts following the 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Cook wrote on his personal X account: "Our hearts go out to all those affected by the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand. Apple is donating to support local relief efforts."
The death toll from the Myanmar earthquake has exceeded 1,700 and the number of injured has exceeded 3,400. According to BBC News, survivors and bodies are still being pulled from the collapsed building.
Thailand also had 18 deaths. The second earthquake occurred about 12 minutes later and measured 6.4 on the Richter scale.
The epicenter was in Sagaing City, near Mandalay, Myanmar's second largest city, about 60 miles north of the country's capital, Naypyitaw. On Sunday, March 30, aftershocks with a magnitude below 5.1 continued to occur northwest of Mandalay.
In Thailand, the capital Bangkok suffered relatively little damage from the earthquake, but an unfinished building collapsed as a result. Bangkok is about 621 miles from the earthquake's epicenter, which shows the scope and power of the earthquake.
Apple frequently donates to the Red Cross and other relief organizations after disasters in the United States and many other countries.
In October 2024, Cook posted a nearly identical message stating that the company would donate to disaster relief workers when Hurricane Milton hit South Florida. The company also provided funding and resources to relief efforts from Hurricane Helene, which killed more than 100 people in the southern United States just weeks ago.
