Research from the University of Oxford and the University of Pittsburgh shows that remote teams are less effective at delivering breakthrough innovation than on-site teams. The study, which analyzed millions of research papers and patents, highlights the challenges of integrating ideas remotely and calls for a balance between digital and physical infrastructure investments.
A study published in the journal Nature shows that remote teams are less likely to make significant discoveries than on-site teams, highlighting the need for a balanced approach to digital and physical infrastructure to foster innovation.
Remote teams are less likely to make breakthrough discoveries than teams working in person, according to new research led by the Universities of Oxford and Pittsburgh into the rise of remote collaboration among scientists and inventors around the world.
In the study published today (November 29) in the journal Nature, the researchers' key finding is that while remote collaboration has the potential to deliver new, creative scientific ideas through easier access to a global knowledge base, it is more difficult for such teams to effectively integrate and achieve breakthroughs.
Lead co-author Dieter Schwarz, Associate Professor of Artificial Intelligence and Work at the Oxford Internet Institute and Director of the Oxford Martin Future of Work Programme, said: "The computer revolution and the rise of the internet have brought together talent from very different fields. However, research shows that across the world, breakthrough innovation is not accelerating, as many had predicted, but is declining."
"Our paper explains why this happens: While remote collaboration over the Internet can bring together diverse talents, it also makes it more difficult to merge their ideas."
"Today, there is a lot of talk about AI-enhanced innovation. However, with the advent of personal computers and the Internet, many are predicting the same thing. This should remind us that there are unlikely to be purely technological solutions to our innovation problems."
The team analyzed more than 20 million research papers published between 1960 and 2020, from 22.5 million scientists in 3,562 cities. They also examined 4 million patents filed between 1976 and 2020 by 2.7 million inventors in 87,937 cities.
During this time, researchers discovered:
The average distance between paper team members increased from 100 kilometers to nearly 1,000 kilometers, and the average distance between patent team members increased from 250 kilometers to 750 kilometers;
The proportion of ultra-long-distance paper collaboration (more than 2,500 kilometers - the distance from Brazil to Liberia) has increased significantly, from 2% to 15%, and patent cooperation has increased from 3% to 9%;
But researchers in these remote teams are consistently less likely to make breakthrough discoveries than their on-site counterparts.
Researchers in remote teams are also less likely to be involved in conceptual tasks (requiring groundbreaking research), such as conceiving a study or writing a paper. However, they are more likely to contribute to technical tasks, such as conducting experiments and analyzing data.
The team says its findings have important policy implications: The post-pandemic shift to remote work may promote smaller, more incremental improvements in scientific research, but may make breakthroughs harder. Therefore, a focus on digital infrastructure should not take precedence over investment in physical infrastructure, which can help reduce travel costs and make housing more affordable.
Lead co-author Professor Wu Lingfei, assistant professor of information science in the School of Computing and Informatics at the University of Pittsburgh, said: "Real innovation often has a 'home'. This is because geographical proximity breaks down hierarchies, enabling flat team structures and intensive communication, which are critical for conceiving breakthrough ideas. For example, it is easier for graduate students to informally discuss ideas with senior professors in the corridors than via email. Even with the advancement of digitalization, online meetings cannot completely replace the unique value of face-to-face interaction in driving innovation."
