Huang’s daughter, Madison Huang, and son, Spencer Huang, have now become leaders in the company’s strategic emerging businesses after each experiencing career explorations that were very different from those in the technology industry. It is worth noting that the two are not engaged in NVIDIA's core chip and data center business. Their daughter Huang Minshan is in charge of the Omniverse department of industrial simulation software, focusing on 3D simulation and digital twin software, while their son Huang Shengbin focuses on the development of AI models and robot perception software.

As Nvidia has become the focus of the global market in the AI wave, the phenomenon of family inheritance and "second generation" has attracted great attention from the outside world, especially in the context that Silicon Valley companies rarely have such inheritance, and its trends have become part of the company's ecology and industry concerns.

According to media reports on August 8, Huang Renxun’s daughter Huang Minshan (Madison Huang) and son Huang Shengbin (Spencer Huang) have now become leaders in the company’s strategic emerging businesses after each experiencing career explorations that are very different from those in the technology industry.

The report pointed out that Huang Minshan and Huang Shengbin have been promoted frequently since joining the company. In particular, Huang Minshan has become an executive who closely prepares the company's major events with the CEO's core team. The two are mainly active in the simulation software and robotics business - tracks that Nvidia has focused on cultivating in recent years.

At an all-hands meeting earlier this year, Huang was asked about the company's "nepotism" issue. He freely admits that the company employs many of the children of its employees and says he doesn't mind it because he believes the parents won't recommend children who would bring shame on them. He also added with a smile that many "second generation British" perform even better than their parents.

For investors, the Huang siblings' rise at the company adds a new dimension to Nvidia's long-term narrative. This is in contrast to the tradition of children of technology pioneers such as Apple's Steve Jobs or Microsoft's Bill Gates choosing to stay away from the family business.

Atypical Silicon Valley path

For a long time, Huang's daughter Huang Minshan and son Huang Shengbin did not follow the traditional path to Silicon Valley.

Huang Minshan attended culinary school, then studied pastry and wine at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, and worked for the French luxury goods giant LVMH Group for nearly four years.

At the same time, Huang Shengbin opened a cocktail bar called R&D Cocktail Lab in Taipei, China.

Technology investor Jens Horstmann said:

I'm glad they chose to go away in the first place, I think they wanted to break away from the norm and see something different.

This experience of being far away from the family halo makes their return to NVIDIA even more unique:

It was not until 2019 that the brother and sister began to move closer to their father's company. They jointly participated in a six-week artificial intelligence online course at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and then entered top business schools to pursue MBAs.

In 2020, Huang Minshan joined NVIDIA's marketing department as an intern and was promoted to the Omniverse department responsible for industrial simulation software in a short period of time, focusing on 3D simulation and digital twin software.

In 2021, Huang Shengbin ended his bar operations and joined NVIDIA's robot simulation-related business in 2022, focusing on the development of AI models and robot perception software.

It is worth noting that the two are not engaged in Nvidia’s core chip and data center business, but are preparing to take advantage of the company’s future strategic departments. Former Nvidia vice president Greg Estes said frankly:

The identity of Huang Renxun’s children cannot be ignored. I think this is human nature and it's impossible for anyone to sit in a meeting with any of them and not realize it. But the point is, they both work hard, are good at what they do, and have a deep affection for the company.

"Family business" controversy and siblings with very different personalities

Unlike traditional manufacturing or financial industries, there are few “second-generation entrepreneurs” among Silicon Valley giants.

For example, most of the descendants of founders such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs have not been involved in family businesses. The internal situation of Nvidia is relatively special: in addition to the Huang family, the children of co-founder Chris Malachowsky, director Aarti Shah and others also work for the company. The children of some senior executives also briefly interned, forming a rare "family color" in Silicon Valley.

Huang Renxun did not shy away from this. He believes that parents recommending their children to the company is a sign of confidence in the abilities of their children.

However, there is widespread concern within and outside the industry about whether family members are truly "worthy of their positions." This discussion has become more heated as Huang Minshan's total income exceeds US$1 million in 2023, she is promoted to a senior director and joins the CEO's core team.

However, the report quoted some former employees as saying that Huang Minshan showed star quality in the company's external activities, and at the same time had a strong work style and high requirements for results, trying not to be labeled as a "nepotism". Colleagues described her as working long hours, responding to emails within minutes and not hesitating to point out the shortcomings of others in meetings.

In contrast, Huang Shengbin appears more low-key and humble. Many colleagues who have worked with him said that it is difficult to imagine that Huang Shengbin will show a tough side like Huang Minshan.

Despite this, Huang Shengbin is also imitating his father's management style. For example, when he was running a bar, he implemented a weekly "five important things" reporting system, which was the management tool Huang Renxun used for a long time at Nvidia.

Today, the identities of the Huang siblings are well known in Asia, especially in Taiwan. At this year's Computex in Taipei, China, Huang Minshan wore a blue suit and walked through the exhibition hall, communicating with representatives of various companies and taking photos.

One attendee commented: She is like a rock star, and we all know she is Jen-Hsun Huang’s daughter.
