On Monday local time, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced at the annual DevDay conference in San Francisco that the number of weekly active users of ChatGPT has reached 800 million, making it far ahead of its peers. In fact, if you add up the average users of the five main competitors, ChatGPT has roughly twice as many users.

The chart above shows average monthly active users. For comparison's sake, ChatGPT's 3.2 billion figure is calculated by multiplying its weekly figure of 800 million by four.

In comparison, the total number of monthly active users of Meta AI, Google's Gemini, xAI's Grok, Perplexity and Anthropic's Claude is 1.575 billion, which is only nearly half of ChatGPT. (Meta AI’s data also includes users of all company platforms, not just single applications)

In February this year, ChatGPT had just over 400 million weekly active users, which means it has more than doubled in the past eight months.

November 2023: Ultraman announced at the first DevDay conference that ChatGPT’s weekly active users exceeded 100 million.

August 2024: According to Axios reports, ChatGPT’s cumulative weekly active users have reached 200 million.

December 2024: At the New York Times DealBook Summit, Altman revealed that ChatGPT has more than 300 million weekly active users.

February 2025: The platform reportedly has more than 400 million weekly active users.

August 2025: The head of ChatGPT said the platform’s weekly active users are expected to increase from 500 million at the end of March to 700 million.

ChatGPT launched in late 2022 and reached 100 million monthly active users in just a few months. UBS analysts wrote in early 2023 that this made it the fastest-growing app in history.
