Apple's latest update cycle for operating systems and software has focused on changes to broader ecosystem services and iOS 17, so macOS Sonoma 14.2 is a minor update that includes Apple Music changes, bug fixes, and more.
Apple released macOS Sonoma 14.1 on October 25, which contains new Apple Music favorites features and fixes. The release of macOS Sonoma 14.2 continues the trend of minimal updates for macOS.
While releasing the new macOS, Apple also provided users with iOS17.2, iPadOS17.2, tvOS17.2 and watchOS10.2. Most of the user-facing updates are on iOS, with the rest being more minor changes to services and apps.
Service updates include a redesigned Apple TV app interface, favorite playlists in Apple Music and sticker reactions in iMessage. Users can also set content warnings in ScreenTime, which will warn users if iMessage stickers contain nudity.
Contact key verification is a new level of security that allows both parties to ensure their identity. This option allows users to swap codes, preventing phishing attempts or other malicious behavior.
It's worth noting that the new Notes app is only available for iPhone. That may change, but not until macOS 15 in 2024.
To update to macOS Sonoma 14.2, open the System Settings app, select General, and then select Software Update. If an update is available, click Update Now and follow the on-screen instructions.
While upgrading macOS Sonoma to version 14.2, Apple also released some updates for older versions of macOS.
These updates upgrade macOS Ventura to version 13.6.3 and macOS Monterey to version 12.7.2. The version number of macOS Ventura 13.6.3 is 22G436, and the version number of macOS Monterey 12.7.2 is 21G1974.
Updates to Apple's older operating systems tend to include security upgrades and bug fixes, as well as improving compatibility with other hardware, rather than introducing new features.
