Palani is another high-profile executive to leave Tesla in recent years. The company is currently working on deploying self-driving taxis in more cities and producing humanoid robots. Sales in Tesla's core electric vehicle business have fallen for two consecutive years due to weak U.S. demand, growing competition and consumer resistance to Musk's work for the Trump administration.

Other executives who have left Tesla include Musk's longtime confidant Omead Afshar, Tesla's vice president of software engineering David Lau, Optimus robotics project engineering lead Milan Kovac, North American sales executive Troy Jones, and his successor, Raj Jegannathan.
