According to Bloomberg, OpenAI executives said the company will support the establishment of a global artificial intelligence governance body. Chris Lehane, vice president of global affairs at OpenAI, said on Wednesday that the United States has an opportunity to leverage its leadership in AI technology to establish a global governance mechanism to create safer and more resilient AI systems.

"To some extent, AI has transcended many mainstream or traditional trade issues. We do have an opportunity to really start to build some kind of mechanism on a global scale and make it possible for countries around the world to participate." Lane told reporters at a media briefing held at OpenAI's Washington office.
Lane said such an agency might be similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency. The agency includes China as a member and sets global safety standards for nuclear energy development to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons. He said that one way to establish this AI governance body is to integrate the AI Standards and Innovation Center under the U.S. Department of Commerce with the AI safety research institutions being established around the world.
