U.S. artificial intelligence (AI) company OpenAI said on Saturday that it has signed an agreement with the Maltese government under which all residents can use its ChatGPT Plus service for free for one year after completing a training course on using AI.

The project will launch in May and is expected to gradually expand as more Maltese residents complete the free course.
The scheme will also be open to Maltese citizens living abroad.
OpenAI's statement quoted Malta's Minister of Economy Silvio Schembri as saying: "We are transforming an unfamiliar concept into practical help for our families, students and workers."
Malta is the first country to launch such a scheme. The company did not disclose financial details of the agreement.
