The U.S. Commerce Department has given OpenAI the green light to widely roll out its advanced GPT5.6 model, a person familiar with the matter confirmed on Tuesday. The U.S. government and the world's most advanced AI companies are negotiating on a case-by-case, real-time basis about how people can gain access to powerful technologies.

OpenAI expects a broad release of GPT 5.6 this week. The breakthrough came after the company conducted additional testing and meetings with government officials.

Sources said the testing was conducted by the Artificial Intelligence Standards and Innovation Center under the U.S. Department of Commerce, and OpenAI sent technical experts to stay in Washington, D.C., to answer any questions that arose.
