As the occupational differentiation driven by AI becomes increasingly obvious, the aura of the originally highly sought-after computer engineering profession is gradually fading, while electricians with professional skills have unexpectedly become the new favorites of the job market, and their salary levels have achieved leaps and bounds.

According to statistics on labor market outcomes from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the current unemployment rate for computer engineering graduates has reached 7.8%, ranking among the highest among various majors. Once upon a time, computer engineering was considered one of the safest career choices for technical students, but with the rapid popularity of AI programming agents, the employment space in this field is being severely squeezed. At the same time, a completely different trend is playing out in the field of AI data centers: the annual income of professional electricians for these core infrastructures has now reached a staggering $280,000.
Although this emerging career path pays well, the barriers to entry are equally demanding. Practitioners usually need to undergo a 4- to 5-year apprenticeship, complete approximately 8,000 hours of paid on-the-job training, and 500 to 900 hours of classroom teaching before they can obtain formal qualifications. During the apprenticeship, they also need to master professional certifications in key areas such as medium-voltage architecture and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards to improve their specialized skills for data center operation and maintenance.
This contrast in the job market is also reflected in corporate recruitment needs. In the field of computer engineering, recruitment requirements are even in extreme cases that are out of touch with reality - for example, a senior software development position posted by an Internet company actually requires candidates to have "more than 10 years of experience using Claude Code", and the AI tool has only been around for about a year. Although this may be attributed to the mistakes of the human resources department, it reflects the confusion and pressure of the computer engineering industry under the impact of AI, which is an objective fact. In contrast, the hard demand for physical infrastructure operation and maintenance personnel in AI data centers continues to rise.
