Intel confirms it will use AMD-style 3D stacked cache technology in future CPUs

Gelsinger said via Tom's Hardware.The CEO said the Meteor Lake chips coming in December will not use 3DV-Cache technology, but added: "In our roadmap, you will see the concept of 3D chips, we will install the cache on one chip, and then we will implement CPU computing on the stacked chips.Gelsinger said Intel plans to use its EMIB and Foveros processes to vertically connect chip dies, "so we feel very good that we now have advanced capabilities for next-generation memory architecture." He added that the technology will be used in Intel's own products and will also be available to foundry (IFS) customers.AMD's second-generation 3DV-Cache chip based on TSMC's SoIC technology was launched earlier this year. The company confirmed that Zen4 uses up to three nodes: a 5nm node for CCD, a 6nm node for IO chips, and a 7nm node for V-Cache. The company explained the advantages and some of the challenges faced by the new generation product during an ISSCC presentation in March.The news that Intel will adopt 3D stacked cache will be welcomed by gaming fans. According to benchmark tests, AMD's Ryzen 77800X3D and Ryzen 97950X3D are two of the fastest chips for gaming right now, thanks to larger built-in cache.Except that Intel's chip stacking technology will appear after Meteor Lake, it is unclear when it will appear.
