[Extreme high temperatures may be associated with 33 health problems] August 31, a new study from Northwestern University in the United States shows that extreme high temperatures are related to a wider range of health problems such as skin diseases and multiple sclerosis, and may even induce traffic accidents. The relevant paper was published in the new issue of "Science Advances" magazine. Heat-related illnesses have been difficult to track because medical records often document only the conditions being treated and often ignore the underlying cause. Inspired by genomics research methods, the research team used a new framework to comb through 1,803 diagnoses from nearly 1 million emergency and urgent care visit records in Chicago from May 2011 to September 2023, and finally identified 33 health problems related to extreme heat exposure, including rashes and swelling, acute renal failure, multiple sclerosis, mental and behavioral disorders, insect bites, as well as traffic accidents, violent attacks, and gun-related injuries.
