[Raw sugar futures resume their gains as traders guard against the impact of El Niño] On October 12, raw sugar futures rose, with bullish traders continuing to bet that the strong El Niño phenomenon will lead to tighter supply in major sugar-producing countries. New York's most actively traded raw sugar futures contract rose 3.2% at one point, resuming a rally that began before London Sugar Week last week. Green Pool Commodity Specialists said in a report on Monday that the market digested the impact of a possible "significant reduction" in the 2026-27 sugarcane production forecast in central and southern Brazil amid record rainfall and the expected impact of El Niño, pushing futures prices higher. Rainfall is expected to intensify this week, possibly further delaying the harvest. Speculators, meanwhile, "have been aggressively buying during this rally, while producers have clearly taken advantage of the recovery in prices to sell," the analysts wrote.
