[The decline in U.S. chip stocks intensifies, and the total market value may evaporate by more than 1 trillion US dollars] October 15th, as the market’s concerns about rising interest rates, overvaluation, and the huge cost of AI infrastructure intensify, the total market value of the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index component stocks is expected to evaporate by more than 1 trillion US dollars. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index has fallen by about 10% in the past six trading days, and is set to set its longest losing streak since May 2025. More than half of the index's components fell at least 10% during that time. Arm Holdings fell nearly 20%, Applied Materials fell about 15%, and Intel fell 11%. GlobalFoundries Semiconductor was the only component to gain. Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi of UBS's chief investment office wrote in a research report on Wednesday: "The pressure on global chip stocks has further intensified in recent days. Although intensified competition in the AI field, rising financing needs and higher interest rates may increase market volatility from time to time, we believe that this recent round of decline is more about the market's readjustment of expectations rather than a fundamental change in AI investment logic."
Global AI-themed trading, led by semiconductor stocks, has seen a sell-off over the past week.
