[GlobalFoundries receives US$21 billion for new chip factories under US-Japan agreement] On October 15th, GlobalFoundries Inc. plans to build two new chip factories with support from the Japanese government of up to US$21 billion. As part of the agreement, it also includes the United States holding a 4% stake in the company. Under an agreement announced on Wednesday, GlobalFoundries will operate the factory at the site in upstate New York, which is jointly owned by the United States and Japan. The factory will be funded by Japan's pledge of $550 billion in investment in the United States. The factories will produce so-called basic chips, important but relatively low-tech semiconductor components used in cars, industrial equipment and communications equipment.
