[The UK pledges to invest 100 million pounds to establish a biosafety laboratory with OpenAI and Anthropic participating in the cooperation] On October 24th, the UK announced that it would invest 100 million pounds (equivalent to US$134 million) to build an AI biosafety laboratory, supported by OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind. This is part of a package of initiatives aimed at improving the UK government’s ability to understand and respond to risks associated with artificial intelligence. According to a British government statement, the laboratory will use artificial intelligence to identify and monitor biological threats; at the same time, OpenAI and Anthropic will provide AI model computing power of up to 200 million pounds. The laboratory will also cooperate with Google DeepMind and life sciences company Basecamp Research. The government has allocated a further £65 million to develop ways to deal with pathogens. British AI Minister Kanishka Narayan said: "As artificial intelligence capabilities continue to increase, the UK must have the ability to protect its citizens and shape the future independently. This means that we must stay ahead of emerging threats such as cyber attacks and biological risks, and at the same time master more of the key technologies on which national security depends." This announcement also includes additional funding: an additional investment of 120 million pounds in the AI Security Research Institute. This agency is the government agency with the highest funding scale. Its core work is to continuously evaluate cutting-edge AI models; it has also allocated 23 million pounds to prepare for the establishment of the AI Economic Research Institute to analyze the economic impact of artificial intelligence.
