[The fastest-rotating near-Earth asteroid known to have been confirmed, successfully improving early warning capabilities] October 26th: Recently, the Yunnan Observatory team of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, together with domestic and foreign collaborators, has made breakthrough progress in the observation and research of ultra-fast-rotating near-Earth asteroids, confirming the fastest-rotating near-Earth asteroid known. Relevant research results have been published in the international astronomical journal "The Astronomical Journal". Research results show that the rotation period of the near-Earth asteroid 2024 XA1 is only 1.63 seconds, which is lower than the 2.58 seconds of the near-Earth asteroid 2024 BX1. It is the fastest-rotating near-Earth asteroid currently known. Under such extremely high-speed rotation conditions, the centrifugal acceleration of the celestial body's surface is much greater than its own gravity, which proves that it is not a rubble pile structure bound by gravity. It must rely on the mechanical strength of the rock material itself to maintain its overall integrity. It is a strength-dominated solid state, which may be formed by the collision and fragmentation of large celestial bodies. This research work not only confirmed 2024 XA1, the fastest-rotating near-Earth asteroid known, but also provided an opportunity to study the internal material structure of meter-scale, fast-rotating and fast-moving near-Earth asteroids, while improving the ability to obtain the physical characteristics of short-term warning asteroids.
