[The newly revised Water Law will come into effect on March 22, 2027] On November 6, the 25th Session of the Standing Committee of the 14th National People's Congress voted to adopt the newly revised Water Law, which will come into effect on March 22, 2027. The newly revised Water Law has nine chapters in total, including general principles, water resources planning, water resources protection, development and utilization, water resources allocation and conservation use, management and protection of rivers and lakes, construction and operation of water projects, water dispute settlement and supervision and inspection, legal responsibilities, and supplementary provisions. The law stipulates that to protect, develop, utilize, conserve water resources and prevent and control water hazards, we must implement the party and national guidelines, policies, decision-making arrangements and water control ideas, adhere to water conservation priority, spatial balance, systematic governance, adhere to the coordinated efforts of the government role and market mechanisms, follow the principles of comprehensive planning, overall consideration, addressing both symptoms and root causes, comprehensive utilization, and stressing benefits, give full play to the multiple functions of water resources, and coordinate the management of water resources, water ecology, water environment, and water disasters.
