[Canada is revealed to be planning to expand overseas intelligence collection capabilities] November 7th, according to Canadian news on the 6th, the Canadian federal government plans to give the Canadian Security Intelligence Service greater overseas intelligence work powers, and may eventually build an independent overseas intelligence agency similar to the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency or British MI6. According to sources, Canadian Cabinet Secretary for National Security and Intelligence Dominic Rochon said at a security seminar held in Ottawa on the 6th that Prime Minister Carney very much hopes to obtain independent foreign intelligence to assist decision-making. Rochon said the Carney government "has been actively exploring how to improve the country's foreign intelligence collection capabilities," stemming in part from concerns about Canada's overreliance on U.S. intelligence. According to the Canadian federal budget announced on the 5th, an additional allocation of CAD 6 billion (approximately US$ 4.25 billion) will be allocated to the Canadian Security Intelligence Service over the next 10 years, part of which will be used to collect foreign intelligence. The agency's current annual budget is approximately C$1 billion (approximately US$710 million). (CCTV News)
