[The spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada responded to reporters’ questions on Canada’s erroneous statement regarding the Joshua Wong case] On November 8, the spokesperson of the Chinese Embassy in Canada responded to reporters’ questions on Canada’s erroneous statement regarding the Joshua Wong case.
Question: On November 6, the Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the foreign ministries of the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and other countries issued a joint statement on the sentencing decision in the Joshua Wong case. What is China’s comment on this?
A: Canada, together with certain countries, issued a so-called joint statement to criticize the Hong Kong SAR court's sentencing decision in the Huang Zhifeng case in accordance with the law, blatantly interfering in Hong Kong's judiciary and China's internal affairs. China is strongly dissatisfied and firmly opposed to this.
Hong Kong is a society governed by the rule of law. It is a basic principle that laws must be followed and violations must be investigated. Joshua Wong has long been conspiring to collude with foreign countries or external forces to endanger national security. He has not stopped even after the implementation of Hong Kong's national security law. His actions have seriously undermined national sovereignty and dignity, endangered the vital interests of the people of Hong Kong and the long-term social stability of Hong Kong. In the face of a large amount of facts and evidence, Huang had no choice but to plead guilty. The Hong Kong SAR court conducted a fair trial and made a sentencing decision in accordance with the law, and there is no room for comment.
Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs and do not allow any external interference. Since the promulgation and implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law, Hong Kong's legal system has become more complete, the society has become more stable and united, and the rights and freedoms enjoyed by Hong Kong residents in accordance with the law have been more fully protected. China demands that Canada stop harboring anti-China elements and disrupting Hong Kong, stop interfering in China's internal affairs, and earnestly respect China's sovereignty and the rule of law in Hong Kong.
