[Apple is subject to a £2 billion class action lawsuit in the UK] September 5th, according to multiple media reports, Apple recently faced a large-scale class action lawsuit in the UK, with a claim amount of up to 2 billion pounds (approximately 18.2 billion yuan). The lawsuit was submitted to London's Competition Appeal Tribunal (CAT) on September 3. It is reported that this lawsuit was led by Ann Pope, a former senior official of the British Competition and Markets Authority, representing many British application developers. The focus of the controversy is Apple’s “App Tracking Transparency” feature (ATT) launched in 2021. This feature requires all apps to obtain explicit permission from users through a pop-up window before tracking users’ cross-application and cross-website activities. The plaintiffs allege that when Apple implemented this rule, it imposed stricter restrictions on third-party developers than its own services, causing the advertising revenue that third-party developers relied on to suffer, while Apple's own advertising ecosystem gained an unfair competitive advantage. An Apple spokesperson said the App Tracking Transparency feature is designed to give users a simple way to control whether apps have the right to track users’ activity across other companies’ apps and websites. This isn’t the first time Apple’s tracking transparency rules have faced regulatory challenges. Last month, Apple agreed in Germany to change rules on how app developers can use personal data for targeted advertising.
