[Germany officially joins the Agreement on Marine Biodiversity] On September 23, Germany officially joined the Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biodiversity in Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (referred to as the Agreement or the Agreement on Marine Biodiversity) on September 22, local time. German Environment Minister Carsten Schneider submitted the letter of approval at the United Nations Headquarters in New York that day. The "Marine Biodiversity Agreement" was adopted on June 19, 2023 and officially entered into force on January 17, 2026. It established binding international rules for the protection of marine biodiversity in sea areas beyond national jurisdiction for the first time, and provided a legal framework for the establishment of marine protected areas and the conduct of environmental impact assessments. The sea areas involved account for approximately two-thirds of the global ocean area. As of now, the agreement has 94 parties and 145 signatories. The German Bundestag has passed relevant domestic laws in the spring of 2026, and the agreement and supporting laws will be binding on relevant entities in Germany from October 21. (CCTV News)
