Crucial 4TB mobile SSD failure: User refused $199.99 refund and got one-for-one replacement

📅 2026-08-26

Abstract:

As Micron gradually withdraws from the consumer SSD and memory business, the follow-up warranty service of the Crucial brand is causing concerns among some users. Recently, a Crucial X9 4TB mobile solid-state drive user applied for an RMA after-sales service after a product failure. At first, he was not replaced with the same model, but received a $199.99 refund package. After the user refused to accept it, the manufacturer was eventually prompted to provide a "one-to-one direct replacement" service.

According to Reddit user "CarefulMeasurement99", its Crucial X9 4TB mobile SSD failed and the device could not be recognized normally. In order to troubleshoot the problem, he used a 2023 16-inch MacBook Pro (equipped with an M2 Max chip) and a self-assembled Windows PC for testing, but the problem could not be solved, and then applied for warranty treatment from Crucial.

Crucial initially approved the user's RMA application, but said that because the Crucial X9 4TB model was not in stock and could not arrange a replacement of the same model, it was only willing to refund $199.99. Users do not approve of this solution. The reason is that the price of large-capacity SSDs has continued to rise recently, and $199.99 is obviously not enough to purchase a product with the same specifications.

Reports indicate that the Crucial X9 4TB mobile SSD is currently priced at around US$579 on Amazon. In this market price context, there is a clear gap between the original refund amount and the actual purchase cost of products of the same level.

The user then further communicated with Crucial customer service via email and mentioned the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act in the letter. After that, Crucial's statement changed: it previously said it had no stock for replacement, and then said it still had a small amount of stock and promised to provide users with "direct one-to-one replacement."

In the end, the user did not accept the initial refund arrangement and successfully obtained a replacement SSD of the same model. Users said that support from community members also motivated them to stick to their original stance. This incident also highlights once again that when consumer-grade storage product prices are high and brands are reducing related businesses, consumers need to pay special attention to the actual replacement costs and warranty rights when facing refund or exchange options during the warranty period.
