Apple quietly updates Magic Keyboard, many keys are now marked with symbols

📅 2026-08-25

Abstract:

Apple quietly launched several upgraded versions of Magic Keyboard today. This update mainly adjusts the button identification method of the American English version. On the new keyboard, the labels for the Tab, Caps Lock, Shift, Return, and Delete keys are no longer marked with edge text, but instead are displayed with icon symbols.

This change is more radical for the full-size model equipped with a numeric keypad, Home, Page Up, Page The text labels for the Down, End, Clear and Enter keys have also been replaced with symbol icons.

A total of four models have been updated this time, namely the Magic Keyboard (USB-C interface), the Magic Keyboard equipped with Touch ID, and the white button version and black button version equipped with Touch ID and numeric keyboard. Only the numeric keyboard version of the Magic Keyboard without Touch ID function is not included in the scope of this update. This model still uses traditional text labels.

It is worth noting that this change is consistent with Apple’s adjustments to its notebook computers earlier this year – the new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and MacBook Neo have previously used symbol icon designs on the same set of keys. Since the American English layout is also the default keyboard setting in countries such as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore, the impact of this update actually extends far beyond the continental United States. For users in the UK and other European regions, this symbolic identification method is actually not unfamiliar, because Apple has already adopted similar designs in its British English and European keyboard layouts.
