Abstract:
Apple officially released the M5 Ultra chip today, calling it the most powerful self-developed chip to date. This chip introduces a four-core architecture into the M series for the first time, integrating two dual-core M5 Max into a unified processor through a new generation of UltraFusion interconnect technology.

According to reports, the new generation of UltraFusion technology can increase the inter-core bandwidth to more than 4.4TB/s, and the interconnection density is more than 6 times higher than before, allowing four cores to operate together as a single chip.
M5 Ultra is equipped with up to 36-core CPU, consisting of 12 super cores and 24 performance cores. Compared with M3 Ultra, its single-thread performance is improved by up to 1.25 times, and multi-thread performance is improved by up to 1.3 times.
In terms of graphics, M5 Ultra is equipped with up to 80-core GPU, and for the first time, a neural network accelerator is integrated into each GPU core of an Ultra-class chip. Apple said that thanks to this design, the peak AI computing performance of the new chip is up to 4.3 times higher than that of the M3 Ultra, and the graphics processing speed is up to 1.8 times higher.
In addition, M5 Ultra is also equipped with a 32-core neural network engine and upgraded media processing engine. The number of video encoding and decoding units is twice that of M5 Max, and it can play up to 33 channels of 30-frame 8K ProRes 422 video streams at the same time.
In terms of memory specifications, M5 Ultra supports up to 512GB of unified memory, and the memory bandwidth can reach up to 1.2TB/s, which is 50% higher than M3 Ultra. Apple said that larger memory capacity and higher bandwidth can help professional users save large data sets locally, increase the number of tokens generated per second, and run large language models with hundreds of billions of parameters directly on the device.
M5 Ultra will be exclusively used in the new generation of Mac Studio. The product is available for pre-order now and will be officially launched on September 22; the version equipped with 512GB unified memory will be available at the end of October.
