American Fervo Energy completed the enhanced geothermal power station in just 23 months and the first batch of electricity has been connected to the grid

Abstract:

U.S. geothermal energy company Fervo Energy announced that its Cape Station power station will begin selling electricity to the grid on September 30, one day earlier than originally planned. The project was synchronized with the power grid about a week ago, and what is currently in operation is the first block of the future 100-megawatt power station, accounting for about one-third of the overall plan. Fervo thus becomes the first enhanced geothermal company to reach this key commercialization milestone.

From groundbreaking to commercial operation, the first block of Cape Station took 23 months. Fervo co-founder and CEO Tim Latimer said that no team in the world has built such a project before, and the company completed the construction ahead of schedule. As the construction process matures, Fervo hopes that future blocks can be completed in as little as 18 months. The company has previously said that the future power generation potential of the entire site could reach 4 gigawatts.

Faster construction and phased commissioning are expected to attract power-hungry data center operators. Data centers can phase in server racks as demand grows, and geothermal projects can be developed and powered in phases. Google, Southern California Edison and others have committed to purchasing power from the Cape Station project.

Traditional geothermal power generation usually uses heat sources close to the surface; Fervo and its peers drill deeper underground and use higher-temperature rock formations to expand the scope of exploitable resources. Founded in 2017, Fervo brings drilling technology and equipment from the oil and gas industry to the development of new geothermal resources. The company went public after scaling up in May this year, raising US$1.9 billion in its initial public offering; previously as a start-up, it had raised more than US$1.3 billion from investors such as Breakthrough Energy Ventures, Congruent Ventures and Capricorn Investment Group.
