Anthropic launches Claude Duet, a proactive AI agent that handles tasks in the background and seeks approval before critical operations

📅 2026-10-22

Abstract:

Anthropic launches Claude Duet, positioning it as a proactive AI agent: it will discover things that need to be processed from the user's connected applications, send reminders before the user speaks, and can also take over the task and continue working after the user leaves the device. The product is built around Claude Opus 5.5 and is aimed at professionals and small business operators with complex workloads.

Duet will compile a short briefing every morning to summarize important matters in connected applications; it will check related accounts every few hours during the day, and only send notifications when it encounters content that requires the user's attention. Users can also tell it what they want to focus on and how often they want to be reminded. All interactions are concentrated in an ongoing conversation, supporting text and voice communication, and can inherit the memories, skills and connected applications already in Claude's account.

Users can task it with tasks ranging from mundane tasks such as scheduling meetings and sorting emails, to complex tasks such as creating dashboards, forecasting sales or financial data, prototyping and building web applications. Duet has an independent virtual machine and browser and does not require the user's computer or mobile phone to be turned on; it will send notifications when a task is completed or requires user review. It can also call over 6,000 connectors and plug-ins through the Claude Marketplace, such as finding Gmail and Slack messages, processing outstanding payments in QuickBooks or Stripe, and preparing payroll or contracts.

When it comes to important operations such as sending messages, making payments, signing documents, or deleting content, Duet will first display the specific content to be executed and wait for user approval; some operations will not be executed even if approved, such as securities transactions and inter-account transfers. Anthropic said that Duet will not directly see the user's password or login token, and has configured additional classification and leakage prevention mechanisms for sensitive information; the most sensitive information such as credit card numbers and government ID documents will be intercepted, and health or personal financial information will only be sent when the user explicitly requests it.

Claude Duet is currently available as a research preview, subject to waitlist application, and is available first to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States. It provides independent iOS, Android applications and web pages, and the usage quota is shared with the user's existing Claude package; background checks will also be included in the quota, and complex tasks will consume more. At this stage, it runs separately from the main Claude application, and may still misjudge the urgency of emails or matters. Life-related matters such as personal travel are not as mature as work tasks, and users are temporarily unable to view its browser operation process.
