Abstract:
Nearly ten years after Apple first launched Face ID facial recognition technology on iPhone X, the well-known German company BASF officially launched a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple.
According to Reuters, BASF, headquartered in Germany, accused Apple of infringing its patents related to facial authentication technology.
Since the advent of iPhone X, Face ID has been widely used in almost all subsequent iPhone models and multiple iPad devices, becoming one of the core biometric features in the Apple ecosystem. It is unclear why BASF chose this moment to formally file the lawsuit.
BASF has a branch in Houston, USA. This lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court in Midland, Texas. The court is known in the industry as friendly to patent plaintiffs.
As of now, Apple has not made any public statement regarding the lawsuit.
