Binance Changpeng Zhao responded to Musk: Now is not the time to joke

📅 2026-10-31

Abstract:

Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, recently encountered what may be the largest cyber theft in history, with a total of approximately US$6.3 billion in funds affected. Binance founder Changpeng Zhao said on social media platform X that Binance did appear to have been hacked and assured users that their funds were safe.

The billionaire’s troubles are not over yet. He received an interaction from the world’s richest man, Elon Musk.

Under Zhao Changpeng’s post of appeasing users and promising compensation, an X user attached a screenshot of a similar statement from Bankman-Fried, a former rival of Changpeng Zhao and a notorious encryption practitioner. Musk responded with a frowning emoji.

Five hours later, Zhao Changpeng responded.

"Elon, I have the utmost respect for you, but this is not the time for joking," he wrote. data-link=""/>

He said: "I know you love us and always support us, but you have over-interpreted this matter, and in a bad way." Changpeng Zhao also said, "Our SpaceX shares are now worth more than $1 billion, and these shares stem from the $500 million we invested when you acquired Twitter."
