Exclusive feature of iPhone 18 Pro Max: battery capacity can be limited to 20Wh, mainly used for shipping and repair

📅 2026-09-19

Abstract:

According to support documents released by Apple, the battery capacity of the iPhone 18 Pro Max model will be limited to 20Wh before it is assembled and delivered to customers. When the customer receives the goods and activates the device normally, the battery capacity will be automatically unlocked. At this time, the battery can exert its full charging capacity and provide longer battery life.

Users can lock capacity but don't try:

Apple locks the battery capacity mainly due to transportation and air freight requirements. Some airline restrictions or regional regulations do not require batteries exceeding a specific capacity to be transported by air. Since other models are not equipped with single-cell batteries exceeding 20Wh, they do not provide the battery capacity locking function, so this is an exclusive feature of the iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Users can also manually lock the battery capacity in the settings, but please do not try it unless necessary (not even for testing). This function is also used for after-sales repairs or sending equipment. When this function is turned on, it may take 14 days to restore the maximum battery capacity. Users can only use a smaller battery capacity before it cannot be turned off.

Please open it manually before preparing to send:

For iPhone 18 Pro Max, this function can be turned on in Settings, General, Transfer or Reset, and Prepare for Shipment. When this function is turned on, the system will automatically consume power, so the temperature of the whole machine will be higher, and the "preparing for shipment" process will also take time. During this period, users are advised not to use the device until the preparation for shipment is completed. After completion, the system will also display the status of ready for shipment.

It is unclear whether the express delivery company will also add relevant regulations requiring users to lock the battery capacity before arranging air shipping. However, based on transportation safety considerations, it is recommended that users manually turn on this function before sending, whether they are preparing to send the device to after-sales maintenance or preparing to send the device to other people.
