Apple's first foldable screen phone iPhone Duo is officially delivered to users, and some orders are not expected to arrive until January next year.

Abstract:

Apple's first foldable screen mobile phone iPhone Duo officially entered the launch and delivery stage on October 23, 2026. The first batch of pre-order users began to receive the new phone, and Apple retail stores also welcomed first-day consumers. Due to strong pre-order demand and limited production and supply, the initial stock quantity is quite limited. Some consumers may have to wait several months to get the device even if they place an order on the launch day.

Apple previously stated that pre-order demand for iPhone Duo has been extremely strong and the company is working hard to deliver the product to consumers as soon as possible. Apple also confirmed that Apple Stores around the world will provide a small amount of inventory for on-site customers to purchase, but reminded consumers that these spot items may sell out quickly. For users who want to go directly to the store to buy without pre-ordering, there is still great uncertainty about whether they can buy a new phone.

According to AppleInsider's previous investigation of the business arrangements of Apple retail stores in many countries and regions, many stores opened early on the day of launch to accommodate customers who picked up pre-orders. However, extended store opening hours does not mean that there is sufficient on-site sales inventory, because Apple usually arranges a large number of appointment pick-up services on the launch day of new machines.

This tight supply is consistent with the iPhone Duo quickly selling out during the pre-order phase. After pre-orders opened on October 16, the estimated delivery time for some configurations was quickly postponed. Since then, the delivery date of new orders displayed on Apple’s official website has been further postponed, and the estimated delivery time of some orders has been scheduled to around January 25, 2027. This means that there is still a significant gap between initial demand and existing supply capacity.

iPhone Duo is Apple’s first product to enter the folding screen mobile phone market. It has a horizontally deployable design that can be put into your pocket like an ordinary smartphone when closed, and provides more screen space when unfolded. Apple said that the expanded inner screen area is about 50% larger than that of the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and is suitable for reading, gaming, video playback, and multitasking; in the closed state, the outer screen still retains a relatively compact use experience.

The machine is equipped with the A20 Pro chip and uses a dual-battery architecture. Apple hopes to strike a balance between a larger screen and portability. On the system side, iOS 27 has been adjusted for the folded form, can switch the display interface according to the unfolded or closed state of the device, and supports multi-tasking functions such as split screen.

However, folding screen design also brings new engineering challenges. Previous reports on the supply chain pointed out that there is production pressure in links such as hinges, displays, and complete machine assembly, which may affect the supply scale in the early stages of launch. Although Apple did not announce specific production yields or inventory quantities, the rapid delay in order delivery time indicates that the company still needs time to expand supply.

The starting price of iPhone Duo in the US market is about US$1,999, which is significantly higher than ordinary flagship phones. Apple also cooperates with operators to launch trade-in and installment discounts. Some eligible consumers can get up to US$1,200 in bill discounts through designated packages and old phone discounts. However, these offers often come with packages, installments and qualification requirements, which do not mean that all consumers can directly purchase at a price as low as $1,200.

For Apple, the launch of iPhone Duo is not only a new product launch, but also an important attempt by the company in the folding screen market. Manufacturers such as Samsung and Huawei have been operating in this field for many years. Apple needs to prove that it can attract consumers to accept new and higher-priced devices by relying on hardware design, software adaptation and ecosystem advantages.

The strong performance of initial orders provides a positive signal for Apple, but the tight initial supply also means that it remains to be seen whether the company can convert pre-order enthusiasm into sustained sales. The long-term performance of foldable screen phones depends not only on the interest of the first consumers, but also on the actual use experience, the durability of the screen and hinge, software compatibility, and whether the selling price meets consumer expectations.

As the first batch of iPhone Duo gradually reaches users, the market will begin to shift from pre-release expectations to testing of actual products. For Apple, the current key task is to improve supply capacity so that more consumers can purchase new machines; and for consumers, if they are not eager to become the first users, waiting for subsequent inventory increases may be an option to avoid a long wait.
