Ford CEO Jim Farley posted a set of photos and videos on social media on September 1, showing two camouflaged Fathom prototypes driving through the streets of Las Vegas after completing high-temperature testing in the Nevada desert. The car body is labeled with words such as "Camo Off in 2027", "This Changes Everything" and "Preorder early 2027", and a QR code is printed to guide you to the pre-order page.
Farley wrote in the post: "Share the new name. Our new medium-duty electric truck. Coming in 2027." Ford had previously announced the Fathom name and pricing on August 6: starting price is $29,945 including $1,595 freight, and $28,350 excluding freight.
Positioned as a medium-sized pickup truck, the price is lower than most gasoline Mavericks
Judging from the appearance of the camouflaged prototype, Fathom adopts a four-door passenger compartment, a short cargo box and a relatively low body profile, with a more obvious swept-back windshield design. Several automotive media have described its size as being closer to the Maverick rather than the larger Ranger. Farley hinted last year that the car was "not actually a pickup truck" and had a "new silhouette," but photos of the car hitting the road this time show that the mass-produced form is closer to the shape of a traditional four-door pickup truck.
Price is Fathom’s clearest competitive weapon. The starting price of US$29,945 including freight is lower than many gasoline version Maverick configurations, and it also locks in the under-exploited market segment of "electric pickup trucks under US$30,000" in advance. The pre-order entrance is online and is scheduled for early 2027.
The first model on the Universal EV platform will be put into production in 2027
The Fathom is the first production vehicle on Ford's Universal EV platform. The Louisville, Kentucky Assembly Plant plans to begin prototype production in the first quarter of 2027, with customer deliveries scheduled for later that year for the 2028 model year. Ford has invested about US$2 billion in revamping the plant, and the company says the new production line can assemble 15% faster models than the plant's original models.
In terms of power system, the base model is rear-wheel drive and equipped with a lithium iron phosphate battery; a front motor and a larger battery pack can be optionally installed to form a four-wheel drive. Confirmed features include BlueCruise driver assistance, two-way power supply, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, digital key and built-in Apple maps. Key parameters such as battery life, power and battery capacity have not yet been announced.
Pneumatic efficiency and cost strategy
Ford’s electric vehicle division Model e is still losing money, and the company aims to achieve breakeven in 2029. Fathom is positioned as a key step in cost reduction on the platform, rather than a scaled-down sequel to the F-150 Lightning. The engineering team said that the wind resistance performance of the medium-sized electric truck is more than 15% better than that of existing pickup trucks; if the same battery is installed in the shape of the most fuel-efficient medium-sized gasoline pickup truck available, the range can be approximately 50 miles or 15% longer, and the improvement at highway speeds is approximately 30%. These data come from the company's engineering caliber and are not EPA certification results.
The prototype has previously appeared at Tesla supercharging stations, and outsiders have speculated that it may use the original NACS charging interface. Ford has not yet confirmed it in writing.
There is still a distance between testing and unveiling
The Las Vegas images Farley released this time are for hot zone testing and brand exposure, and do not mean that the delivery time will be advanced. What will roll off the assembly line in Louisville in the first quarter of 2027 will still be a prototype, and customer delivery will not be until later in the same year. The complete configuration list and option prices will not be locked until closer to launch. Local reports in Detroit say Ford plans to officially unveil the vehicle within this year.
Fathom does not replace the full-size positioning of the F-150 Lightning. Its goal is to lower the purchase threshold of electric pickup trucks to less than 30,000 US dollars, and at the same time dilute the manufacturing costs of the next generation of electric vehicles through a common platform. At present, the price has been clarified, but the battery life and production capacity have not yet been announced.
